Dear Parents/Guardians,
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to the 2020 Summer Learning Academy. In preparation for our remote Summer Learning Academy, we would like to provide you with a set of guidelines for our remote learning platform in order to promote the best learning experience for your child. Beginning July 6, 2020 and ending August 6, 2020, each student will be offered daily (Monday-Thursday) face-to-face instruction that will consist of individual, small group, and whole group instruction. Your child’s teacher will be sending out a schedule of when your student’s instruction will take place. Please anticipate it to be between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm Monday through Thursday.
On Tuesday, June 30, we will be distributing tablets and supplies. If you requested that your child needs a tablet, please come to Memorial School Gym Entrance on Tuesday, June 30 between 10:00 am-1:00 pm. We will also be handing out supplies that day for anyone who needs supplies to enhance the remote learning (crayons, paper, pencils, scissors, etc). The K-2 teachers have included special writing paper and dry erase sleeves for the students to utilize for remote learning. We have set up some online expectations for the students. Please read these over and discuss them with your child. We want this to be a rewarding experience this summer, but we will need assistance in doing so.
Online Expectations:
- The teachers will send out Google Classroom requests. Please check emails to login to the special Google Classroom.
- Teachers will continue to post daily lessons and provide individualized weekly schedules on the Google Classroom.
- Identify and decide where the screen time learning will take place. It should be in a quiet, clear space away from as many distractions as possible. It may be a good idea to designate a specific spot in your home so that your child can associate that space with “work time.”
- Students are expected to complete the work that is assigned each day so that it is paced appropriately. This will help to maintain the skills they acquired during the school year.
- The work assigned and time on the computer should be built into a schedule as part of their daily routine. Children are more likely to tolerate the “workload” if they are aware of the expectation each day while they follow a consistent routine.
- The ultimate goal is to establish the behavior of coming to the screen each day without difficulty and completing the work with the teacher. If a child will not meet with the teacher or is consistently not completing the work, a phone call will be made to the parent. If this behavior continues, the student may be asked to leave the program.
