“In a world where you can be anything, be kind”. This quote sums up the theme for one of our virtual learning lessons in 8th grade math class. To recognize International SEL Day (Social Emotional Learning), students watched and reflected on the animated short film “Mr. Indifferent”, written and directed by Aryasb Feiz. The film shows a man going about his daily life, keeping to himself, and not going out of his way to help others, even when there were definite times he could have. One incident, however, changed his outlook on life and helping others when he saved an older woman’s life. After this, he was inspired to help whoever he could, and seemed much happier in his life. Students watched the film and reflected on the main idea and lesson to be learned. They also wrote about how they are kind and helpful to others in their daily lives. Their responses were impressive and inspiring! To sum it up, acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, are a win-win. Being kind helps others in need and helps you feel happier in your own life, too!
