School Climate Survey 2023-2024 - In March, we asked students, caregivers, and staff to share their thoughts and opinions about the School Climate at each of the four schools in our district. Here are some of the key takeaways from that survey and our plans to make improvements for the future. Respondents: We asked students, staff, and parent/caregivers to respond to the survey. This is how many participated from each group: 230 students grades 3-5, 166 students grades 6-8, 123 staff members, 294 parents/caregivers.

Dear Eatontown Public Schools Community Member:

During the course of the 2023-2024 school year, each of our four schools conducted a NJ School Climate Improvement (NJ SCI) survey to help obtain multiple perspectives on school climate. Surveys were distributed via email to parents/caregivers and school staff. Students in Grades 3-8 were provided access to the online survey as well. Data collection and analysis are supported by the school’s School Equity Teams (SETs) through partnership with Rutgers University.

In the future, your voice is important to this process. Each school will continue to conduct the NJ SCI survey once per year. School climate is the character and quality of school life that is based upon the shared experiences of students, staff, and parents/caregivers. Positive school climate is associated with:

  • Academic achievement

  • Improved attendance

  • Reduction of bullying and violence

  • Physical, mental, and social and emotional health

  • Positive social relations

  • Inclusive practices

  • Staff retention, self-efficacy, and commitment

  • Improved relationships and communication with families

In the spirit of transparency, the district is providing some preliminary data to the school community based upon the NJ SCI results. Please review the information below. This information will support future district and school planning.

What we're doing well: students, staff members, and parents/caregivers agreed that our schools make them feel physically safe, provide supportive relationships between staff and students, and provide support for students Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). 81% agreed that there is a sense of physical safety, 81% agreed that there are supportive staff-student relationships, and 78% agreed that the district provides supports for student social and emotional learning. Where we can improve: We know that there are areas that can be improved upon. Students, staff members, and parents/caregivers all felt we could do a better job with students' interpersonal behaviors, and our staff believe that we need to provide more organizational resources and supports. Staff members and parents/caregivers also agreed that we could do more to provide support and engagement for families. Only 67% of respondents agreed that we are supporting good student interpersonal behaviors, 68% of staff felt we provide enough organizational resources and support, and 78% of staff and parents/caregivers felt there is enough family support and engagement. Our focus for the future: In the 2024-2025 school year and beyond, we plan to focus on some key areas to make improvements for our students, our staff, and our school community. We will focus on student interactions, family engagement, and tools and resources.

Thank you for your consideration and support. If you have any questions, please contact your child's school principal.

Sincerely

Scott T. McCue
