Dear Parents/Guardians,
Memorial School has a rich tradition that has been molded through years of change, updating curriculum and establishing best practices. It has been quite the few years in regards to the educational landscape, but I am happy to say that we are all set for a very productive and educational school year.
In my third year as the Memorial Principal, I look forward too many great activities with the students and staff and expect nothing but their best on a daily basis. We have many programs to offer and go by three basic principles: Respect, Discipline and Accountability.
As middle schoolers, students will experience more freedom and flexibility with their schedule. Students travel from class to class and have different teachers for each subject. Students will still have recess and can utilize 2 lounge areas if they do not want to go outside during lunch/recess. Our school policy is no phones during the academic periods, but we allow them to play games or browse the internet during lunch and recess.
We also have a Hawk’s Nest that contains, games, puzzles, video game consoles and foosball. Students can go there if they collected enough Hawk Bucks. We also brought back Student Council and Student Government this year. Each class will have a class president, vice president, treasurer and secretary.
In regards to academics we have a newer Science program that will make the content more interactive and challenging, more math programs such as Big Ideas, iReady, Delta Math and IXL, and a very comprehensive ELA program that allows teachers to work on writing, reading and other topics. Students will have Physical Education and Health each for a half of the year and alternate daily with Spanish and Art.
For students that are struggling, we have many programs available and can offer intervention tools to help them along the way. In addition, teachers here are always available and do a great job assisting when needed. We are happy to offer a mentoring program this year that students can seek help from designated teachers for Social Emotional issues.
This year we are introducing electives on Wednesdays for our students. Each marking period, students will choose one morning elective and one afternoon elective that they will participate in. Some of these courses include- sports journalism, fitness and weight lifting, Greek mythology, financial literacy, geometry, yoga, mindfulness, life skills, Hawk Heroes, computer science and much more.
I am truly looking forward to the school year ahead. Through parent communication, student input, and a careful look at school data, the next few months will definitely be a productive one.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the main office. I encourage you to follow the school chain of command when facing any issues. Remember, we are here to help. Take care and best wishes for a wonderful school year.
